Our guide to utilising your social media profiles when job hunting

The business world has evolved significantly in recent years, with the age of social media completely transforming the way in which people communicate, work and even seek out new job roles. For the recruitment industry in particular, social media has opened up many new avenues for recruiters to seek out their ideal candidates, and therefore this also presents fantastic opportunities for candidates to find their dream role. But how can job seekers make the most out of their social media profiles when job hunting?

The perfect social platform for job seekers

With an astounding growth of 123 million users in the space of two years, LinkedIn has become a powerhouse in the recruitment world for both recruiter and candidate alike, making it the social platform of choice when it comes to searching for a new job.

LinkedIn offers a variety of features to support the recruitment process, including jobs listings, easy applications, as well as the option to indicate to recruiters and employers that you are actively seeking a new role. Particularly for those seeking roles in the professional services industries, including accounting, HR, marketing, finance and others, with over 30 million companies using LinkedIn, the opportunities could be endless.

Tips for optimising your LinkedIn profile

Complete your profile in full

As it will be any recruiter or employer’s first impression of you and your experience, it is vital that your profile reflects your skills, knowledge and employment history in full. Ensure your headline outlines your expertise and the job you want, e.g. Financial Director, Human Resources Administrator, etc, as well as clearly outlining the type of role you are looking for in your bio.   Essentially your profile should act as your virtual CV to prospective employers, however CVs themselves are not to be forgotten, we would highly recommend that you regularly update this alongside your profile.

Endorsements

The endorsement feature on LinkedIn can provide the perfect opportunity to showcase to prospective employers what you are like to work with. Don’t be afraid to ask past employers, colleagues or even clients to endorse you, this can usually be encouraged with the promise of a reciprocal endorsement.

Share relevant industry posts

Not only will this allow you to research relevant companies within your chosen industry, but this will also provide an invaluable source of industry information as companies share updates and news, to impress prospective employers with during an interview.
